Action TU1208
Civil Engineering Applications of Ground Penetrating Radar
COST Success Story
Training School on UWB Antennas, Technologies and Applications - Karlsruhe, Germany, April 20-24, 2015
The COST Action TU1208 is co-organising, jointly with the European School of Antennas (ESoA) and the European Association on Antennas and Propagation (EurAAP), a Training School on "Ultra-Wide Band Antennas, Technologies and Applications." This School will be held in the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, in Karlsruhe, Germany, on April 20-24, 2015.
The course will present an insight into the design, evaluation and measurement procedures for Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) antennas, as well as the characteristics of UWB radio channels. Special care will be taken regarding impulse applications: dispersion, antenna fidelity, shaping filters, and other related issues, will be discussed. State-of-the-art UWB systems will be presented, operating in the fields of communications, radars, and sensor networks. Advanced UWB arrays, innovative dual-polarised antennas, as well as distributed antennas for data transmission, localisation and imaging will be also introduced. The applications presented more in detail will be the Ground Penetrating Radar and the medical imaging. Techniques for wide band material characterisation will be dealt with, this being a fundamental prerequisite for both the above-mentioned applications. The theoretical lectures will be complemented with laboratory tutorials on antenna design and measurement techniques, including characterisation of UWB antennas in anechoic chamber, detection of hidden objects and wave propagation simulations, detection of breathing and heart beating.
The Coordinator of the Training School is Prof. Werner Wiesbeck (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany, WG Member of the COST Action TU1208). The Trainers are Prof. Werner Wiesbeck, Prof. Llouis Jofre (Univ. Politecnica de Catalunya, Spain), Prof. Jürgen Sachs (TU-Ilmenau, Germany, WG Member of the COST Action TU1208), and Lara Pajewski ("Roma Tre" University, Italy, Chair of the COST Action TU1208).

Training School Grants
for PhD Students & Early-Career Investigators
The COST Action TU1208 offered 8 grants of 650,00 EUR to PhD Students and Early-Career Investigators (ECIs) willing to attend the Training School on UWB Antennas, Technologies and Applications. COST Training School grants represent a contribution to cover travel, meal and accommodation expenses.
The deadline for submitting grant applications was April 9, 2015. After the School, the granted Trainees will have to coordinate between themselves to write a joint report, presenting in detail the concepts they will have learnt during the School. Detailled instructions and a template have already been provided to the granted Trainees by the Action Chair.
The Trainees whose application has been granted are:
