Training School on Future Radar Systems: Radar2020

Karlsruhe, Germany, May 2-6, 2016

The COST Action TU1208 is co-organising, jointly with the European School of Antennas (ESoA), the second edition of the successful Training School on "Future Radar Systems: Radar2020."

This course will be held in the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, in Karlsruhe, Germany, on May 2-6, 2016, and it will cover the state of the art and new trends on radar technologies. It is targeted to PhD

students, researchers, scientists, and engineers interested in radar system engineering. Please be informed that this course can be attended by maximum 18 Trainees, to guarantee a high-quality training.

 

After an introduction to the radar basics, as the propagation of electromagnetic waves, radar equation, polarimetry, analysis of Radar Cross Section (RCS) of targets and RCS measurement, the present radar types will be presented, as the CW-, FMCW-, pulse-, MTI-, mono-pulse-, and UWB-radar. These introductory lessons will be complemented by the waveform and radar parameter topics. The core part of the course will then be the presentation of the concepts for future radars, which will be significantly different from the state of the art radars, with system functions like digital beamforming, MIMO radar, intelligent signal coding (f.e. OFDM) and antenna array imaging for high resolution-small size radars. Typical radar antenna concepts for beam-forming, arrays, and phased-arrays will be presented, as well. Another important part of the course will be concerned with the presentation of some special radar applications, like automotive radar, ultra wideband radar, radar for medical applications, and of course the Ground Penetrating Radar, but also through-the-wall radar and Synthetic Aperture Radar.

Trainers are Prof. Werner Wiesbeck, Prof. Thomas Zwick (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), Prof. Marwan Younis (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), and Prof. Alexander Yarovoy (Delft University of Technology, Delft, Netherlands, TU1208 WG Member). The Action Chair, Dr Lara Pajewski ("Roma Tre" University, Rome, Italy) will attend the Training School and deliver an introduction to the COST programme and to the Action TU1208.

Training School Grants

for PhD Students & Early-Career Investigators

 

The COST Action TU1208 offers 3 grants of 650,00 EUR to PhD Students and Early-Career Investigators (ECIs) willing to attend the Training School on Future Radar Systems.

 

COST Training School grants represent a contribution to cover travel, meal and accommodation expenses. The deadline for submitting grant applications is April 10, 2016.

 

After the School, the granted Trainees wil have to coordinate between themselves to write a joint report. Detailled instructions for the preparation of the report will be given during the Training School.

 

To submit a Grant application, the following items had to be sent to school@gpradar.eu:

  1. Curriculum vitae including the list of publications.
  2. Motivation letter written by the Applicant.
  3. Support letter written by the PhD Supervisor (for PhD Students) or by a colleague (for Early-Career Investigators, i.e., researchers who received their PhD no more than 8 years ago).

 

The selection of Granted applications will be based on the COST key principles of excellence and inclusiveness. COST is supported by the EU Framework Programme Horizon2020 and its policy contributes to the "Spreading Excellence and Widening Participation" Horizon 2020 goal. To identify excellent applicants, we ask applicants to submit a curriculum vitae, a motivation letter and a support letter. At the same time, we aim at achieving inclusiveness. This objective is developed by COST around three main elements: support to Early-Career Investigators, fostering of gender balance and support to researchers coming from less-research intensive COST Member Countries.
